 Red Cross French national abducted by armed men in DarfurOctober 22, 2009 San Antonio, Texas (CaymanMama.com) — Much to the dismay of the International Committee of the Red Cross, several armed men abducted a French national working for the organization on Thursday in Sudan’s hostile Darfur region, the Red Cross announced. Gauthier Lefevre, a staff member for the Red Cross, was kidnapped close to the town of Al Geneina in West Darfur, near the Chad border. According to CNN.com, “Lefevre and his colleagues were returning to Al Geneina in clearly marked ICRC vehicles at the time, the agency said. They were completing a trip north of the town to help local communities upgrade their water supply systems, it said.” It is not known who the armed abductors were, but the ICRC said they are diligently working with authorities for Lefevre’s release. Approximately 300,000 innocent civilians have died and 3 million more have lost their homes in the volatile Darfur region, where the Sudan government forces and their Arab Janjaweed militia allies have waged a caustic war with rebels since 2003, as per the United Nations.
