New Zealand’s prime minister will help spread Christmas joy to one lucky stranger this year after signing up for a nationwide Secret Santa.

Jacinda Ardern, the 37-year-old who became the country’s youngest prime minister in 150 years in October, tweeted: “So you may have noticed I don't tweet especially often (I just lurk) but as a ridiculous lover of Christmas I couldn't miss the chance to join the @nzsecretsanta movement.

She added: “Feel free to join in my over the top Christmas cheer.”

As part of the anonymous Secret Santa gift-giving, Twitter users are randomly assigned a person to buy a gift for.

To find the perfect gift, participants must search for clues on the person’s Twitter profile, while contributors are also encouraged to tweet hints about their ideal present.

While one lucky person will receive a gift from New Zealand’s prime minister, another will have the pressure of picking a present for the country’s leader.

“I’ve just signed up for awesomeness at #nzsecretsanta. Cos our PM did..looks like fun, come play!” tweeted one.

Another wrote: “Gasp. What do you get the PM if you get her for #nzsecretsanta?”

@BR3NDA tweeted: “Omg the pressure if you got @jacindaardern as your #nzsecretsanta.”

NZ Secret Santa say there has been a surge in the number of people signing up in response to the PM taking part.

“While most are here as a result of the prime minister's announcement, please remember she will only be assigned to one person,” they tweeted.

Another high profile Secret Santa fan is billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates. The Microsoft founder has previously taken part in Reddit’s Secret Santa present exchange, involving 60,000 users from 120 countries - here’s the gift he got for one lucky person.
