T

he Transportation Ministry has started cracking down on overloaded freight trucks on three weighbridges two in West Java and another one in East Java.

Under the new policy, workers unload some of the goods from overloaded trucks, said Budi Setiyadi from the Transportation Ministry in Bandung on Thursday.

“If a truck's capacity is 10 tons, but it's transporting 20 tons, we will unload 10 tons,” Budi said, adding that the new policy had been in place since Wednesday.

The truck operator is required to send another truck to pick up the unloaded goods or it is required to hire a truck from a third party, Budi said.

In West Java, the two weighbridges are located in Karawang and Indramayu, while the one in East Java is located in Widang.

Meanwhile, for trucks exceeding allowable dimensions, the ministry requires the truck owners to adjust the truck's dimensions based on their original size within one month, Budi said, adding that currently, the ministry operates 12 weighbridges, which will expand to 43 in September.

Operation of overloaded trucks is blamed for the shorter lifespan of roads in major parts of the country, costing the state of Rp 43 trillion (US$2.97 billion) annually.

The ministry took over the operation of weighbridges from regional administrations because of lack of effectiveness. From 113 weighbridges handed over to the regional administrations, only 43 bridges will be ready for operation in September.

The government will auction the operatorships of the weighbridges to private companies with concession periods between 15 and 20 years. (bbn)
