The Director General of Shipping Malini V Shankar dedicated the Seafarer's Memorial -- "A tribute to the living and the lost" -- at the Merchant Navy Club, Kochi to the maritime community.

Speaking on the occasion, she lauded the yeomen contributions of shipping and particularly that of seafarers as the propelling force behind the world trade. She reminded that the modern world owes a lot to the thousands of seafarers who sacrificed their lives at sea to ensure a modern way of life, which we all enjoy today.

M. Beena, Chairperson, Cochin Port Trust, said that the seafarer memorial is a befitting tribute to the community which rightfully deserve it. She was confident that the memorial would attract the tourist coming to the Cochin Port and would spread the news across the world and thereby lifting the image of Kochi.

"A tribute to the living and the lost" stands as a sobering reminder of the dangers of the sea and also a lasting testament to the strength of a community pooling their efforts to fulfil their dreams. The 16 ft long and 15 ft high installation is conceived and executed by well-known artist Maraprabhu Ramachandran.

The memorial recites the saga of seafaring and depicts their survival instinct against the odds. The memorial symbolises the power of the community and is a tribute to all those lost at sea and is dedicated to them - past, present, and future.
