Sand-carrying cargo vessel capsizes in Turag
A sand-laden cargo vessel capsized in the Turag river at Aminbazar point, on the outskirts of the capital, this afternoon -- a day after a trawler sank in the same area yesterday.
Nazma Akhter, duty officer of Fire Service and Civil Defence Control Room in Dhaka, confirmed the development to our Savar correspondent.
The cargo vessel suddenly sank at Aminbazar point in the river around 3:30pm while it was heading towards Aminbazar Bridge coming from Meghna river, said the duty officer.
Four people, who were on the vessel, managed to swim ashore, said Nazma Akhter.
On information, firefighters rushed to the spot and started a drive to pull out the sunken vessel, added the officer.
Yesterday, a trawler that was carrying 18 people capsized in the river in the same area after being hit by a sand-laden cargo vessel.
Firefighters rescued five bodies -- a woman and four children -- till yesterday afternoon. Three people still remain missing since the incident.
