Port of Mobile records seventh consecutive month of volumes growth

The Alabama Port Authority has announced its busiest month ever for containerised cargo, as the Port of Mobile keeps driving its steadfast growth.

In July 2022, port operations across terminals broke the 50,000 TEU mark for the first time since 2008.

The figure accounts for a 184.7 per cent year-on-year increase in intermodal cargo, according to the port authority, and a 35.8 per cent surge for dry and refrigerated cargo.

The news follows June’s impressive results, when the Alabama Port Authority reported a total of 263,562 TEU for the year so far handled at the Port of Mobile.

According to port authority, the Port of Mobile has delivered impressive results amid global disruption, marking its seventh consecutive month posting double and triple-digit growth for overall throughput volume and intermodal rail volume respectively.

The total number of containers handled at the Port of Mobile through July hit 316,473 TEU, a 12.4 per cent increase over 2021.

The authority said that current fluidity at the port enables the transit of cargo from ship to Chicago in only two days, thanks to the partnership with its terminal operator, APM Terminals (APMT).

Given recent figures, the Alabama Port Authority is on track to surpass 500,000 TEU in 2022, as a recently inked expansion deal with APMT is set to double the terminal’s throughput to 1 million TEU in 2025.

“The Port of Mobile is open for business,” said Port Authority Director and CEO, John C. Driscoll.

“This growth shows that Mobile is a top choice for shippers looking to avoid congestion and delays as they move their cargo quickly and efficiently.

“As we look ahead to increased capacity and a deeper, wider ship channel, the Port of Mobile will keep building on this success for the state.”
