Freighters ship less cargo

Freighter traffic is up slightly on the St. Lawrence Seaway, but cargo shipped is down nearly 10 per cent.
Transits total 1,791 as of July 30, up 1.7 per cent from 1,761 in 2021, St. Lawrence Management Corp., says.
Dry bulk shipments increased 5.5 per cent from 5.1 million tonnes to 5.4 million tonnes. Liquid bulk cargoes jumped 21 per cent from 1.5 million tonnes to 1.8 million tonnes.
Grain shipments dipped 19.6 per cent from 4.3 million tonnes to 3.4 million tonnes.
Iron ore cargoes fell 17.5 per cent from 4.3 million tonnes to 2.9 million tonnes.
Coal shipments decreased 21 per cent from 944,000 tonnes to 742,000 tonnes.
General cargo volume fell 14 per cent from 1.7 million tonnes to 1.4 million tonnes.
Total cargo of 15.7 million tonnes is down 7.7 per cent from 17 million tonnes as of July 2021.
Soo Locks in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., is part of the St. Lawrence Seaway.
