U.S. Coast Guard Releases Report on Remaining BP Oil Spill Cleanup Work

The Life Care Solutions Group discusses a report released by the U.S. Coast Guard concerning remaining BP oil spill cleanup work.

NEW ORLEANS, LA, USA, August 21, 2013 /EINPresswire.com/ -- The U.S. Coast Guard recently released a report stating that only 95 miles of coastline remains to be cleaned three years after the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010. According to an article published by The Christian Science Monitor, some environmental groups and others have expressed fears that recovery efforts may end too soon, stating there is ongoing damage that continues to warrant attention, and will continue to require response efforts even after the 95 miles have been combed.

Garret Graves, chair of the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority of Louisiana (CPRA), a state agency leading hurricane protection and ecosystem restoration, is quoted by The Christian Science Monitor as stating of the issue, “The response should end when conditions on the ground dictate such actions. We’re not anywhere close right now.”

The Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion that caused the spill led to the deaths of 11 people in addition to the release of a purported 210 million gallons of oil into the ocean for over a three-month period. Extensive cleanup efforts were required in the aftermath of the spill, with response workers being brought in from throughout the country to provide assistance. A number of these workers have since reportedly complained of experiencing related health complications thereafter, but have been left out of a funding group for which BP has allocated settlement funds to provide restitution for the damage caused. With the cleanup efforts being an ongoing matter even three years later, other workers may also find themselves being within this group.
