Press Release: IMF Hosts Training Seminar for Parliamentarians from Arab Countries

Press Release No. 13/478 November 27, 2013

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) Institute for Capacity Development in cooperation with the IMF Middle East and Central Asia Department held a regional training session for parliamentarians from Arab countries in Kuwait on November 26-27, 2013 to foster greater interest in economic issues, familiarize the participants with the IMF’s work and provide a forum to exchange views on socio-economic developments in the region. The two-day session was attended by 22 parliamentarians from different Arab countries, as well as senior staff from the IMF headquarters.

The seminar included a mix of lectures, technical sessions, and case studies through interaction with the participants and practical training. Discussions revolved around collaboration on public policy issues; building social networks; reforming energy subsidies; labor laws that will help on increasing job opportunities; managing natural resources; and achieving growth lead by the private sector.

The seminar focused on the role of parliaments and constitutional councils in planning general economic policies. In addition, it helped clarify the role of the Fund in helping to plan and implement these policies. The event was an opportunity for the Fund to discuss concerns and suggestions by the attendees. It also facilitated the exchange of opinions and expertise regarding economic policies and a discussion on how to face new in the region. Participants welcomed the opportunity to exchange views on training strategies with IMF staff and peers from other Arab countries.
