Associa Minnesota Adoptees Thankful for a Memorable Holiday

BROOKLYN PARK, Minn., Jan. 26, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Associa Minnesota again participated in the Hennepin County Volunteer Services Program and "adopted" two individuals over the holiday season. Adoptees Penny and Tom each sent in pictures and warm wishes for the Associa Minnesota employees who were part of the effort.

"Associa Minnesota donated many items for both Penny and Tom, including handmade blankets from one team member, and more than what was expected on both request lists," said Associa Minnesota President Lance Govang. "This is something our staff loves to do and we plan to continue every year knowing that our Associa family gets as much out of it as the families we adopt. This year was really special to see and hear directly from the folks we adopted."

Penny currently lives in a nursing home. Her mother passed away earlier this year and it has been hard for her. Penny is a warm and cheerful person, who is compassionate to those around her. Penny received sweatshirts, t-shirts, blankets, pillows, slippers, a sewing kit and numerous gift cards.

Tom is a veteran of the Vietnam era serving in the US Navy as a hospital corpsman.  He builds models and watches everything and anything about war and the military. Tom has struggled over the last year with a traumatic experience. Tom received military models, a 40 inch TV, DVD player, coffee maker, and numerous gift cards.

"I had the best time watching Tom open his gifts. He was so excited about the models, especially the Huey helicopter since that is from his era," said Assistant County Veteran Service Officer Sarah McGinty. "I want to thank Associa Minnesota for making this the best Christmas he has had in more than 30 years."

But Associa Minnesota didn't stop there. Upon seeing the rocking chair Tom was sitting in, Mark Bloomberg, human resources manager, commented that he now needed a proper recliner to watch that new 40 inch TV. After conferring with Hennepin County Volunteer Services to assess Tom's needs, an email blast went out to the Associa staff and everyone immediately stepped up to assist Tom in fully furnishing his living space. Additional donated items included a dinette table and chairs, TV stand, nightstand, mattress, box spring and frame. New items included cooking supplies, bedding, lamps and an end table.
