In the Russo-Japanese War, the Russians surrendered to the Japanese after the battle of Port Arthur. The Russians were trapped by the Japanese who had sunk merchant ships at the harbor entrance. The Japanese lost 58,000 men killed or wounded and a further 30,000 sick.
What year was it? In World War One, the Turks under Ahmet Pasha were heavily defeated by the Russians at the end of the Battle of Sarikamis. After five days fighting and a lengthy retreat, the Turks lost 77,000 out of 95,000 men.
