…says product adulterated with “wheaten flour”

The Government Analyst Food and Drug Department (GA-FDD) is advising consumers not to buy ‘Dost patent barley’ since the Department has concluded through analysis that this brand of barley has been adulterated with “wheaten flour” which it says is against Laws of Guyana.

GA-FDD says that Dost patent barley has been adulterated with wheaten flour

GA-FDD says that the product which bears the label “Product of Canada, packed exclusively for Geetanjali Rai, Guyana”, was placed under investigation after concerns were raised and complaints lodged against the same.

Moreover, the Department said that on two occasions, in contravention of the Laws of Guyana, their inspectors were denied entry unto the premises of Geetanjali Rai to continue their investigations.

In light of the above mentioned scenario, GA-FDD says that it will now be widening its search to target and analyse similar products such as those that are also being imported from intra and extra regional countries, in addition to investigating other brands to be submitted to the Department for analysis.

See full statement below:

The Government Analyst Food and Drug Department (GA-FDD) wishes to advise the General Public that the “DOST Patent Barley” bearing the label “Product of Canada, packed exclusively for Geetanjali Rai, Guyana”, was found to be ADULTERATED with wheaten flour and this is in contravention of the Laws of Guyana Food & Drug Act Chapter 34:03, Section 25, Part 5, which states that “Any person who sells an article of food that is adulterated is guilty of an offence”.

Analysis conducted by the Food Chemistry laboratory of the GA-FDD determined the product to be adulterated and this was after weeks of meticulous investigation and collaboration among Inspectors and Analytical scientific Officers.

The investigation was initiated as a result of concerns raised and complaints lodged at the Monthly National Food Safety and Control Committee Meeting.

The Department has since visited the premises of Mr. Geetanjali Rai at Canal #1 West Coast Demerara on 11th & 12th   May 2017 and on both occasions, Inspectors were unable to gain access to the premises to continue their investigation. Denied access to a premise to which the Act applies in contravention to the Laws of Guyana Food and Drug Act Chapter 34:03 Part VI, Section 21, “Powers of Inspectors”.

Consumers are therefore advised not to purchase this particular brand of Patent Barley because it is adulterated and our investigation is now been widen to target and analyse similar products such as those that are also being imported from intra and extra regional countries. In addition, Environmental Health Officers in the regions will now be targeting, for investigation other brands to be submitted to the Department for analysis.

The Department will continue to utilize the resources that are to our disposal to facilitate trade and most importantly to protect consumers of our society against falsified and / or substandard food, drug, cosmetics and medical devices.
