Michael O'Neill: Scotland hold 'productive' talks over managerial vacancy
Last updated on .From the section Scottish
The Scottish FA has held "productive discussions" with Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill.
O'Neill impressed the SFA delegation with the level of his preparation during a lengthy meeting.
The 48-year-old has been Scotland's number one target since the departure of Gordon Strachan in October.
A compensation package was agreed with the Irish FA last week and O'Neill and the SFA will now take time to reflect on their discussions.
O'Neill has been offered a four-year extension to the two years left on his current Northern Ireland contract.
Neither Northern Ireland nor Scotland have a competitive fixture until the Nations League kicks off in September.
The draw for Uefa's new competition takes place on 24 January.
Former Brechin City and Shamrock Rovers boss O'Neill has been in charge of Northern Ireland for six years, guiding them to Euro 2016 - their first major finals for 30 years.
He steered them to second place behind Germany in a World Cup qualifying group that included the Czech Republic and Norway, only to lose out on a place at this year's finals in Russia after a 1-0 play-off loss to Switzerland.

Regan should be sacked now, along with the rest of the SFA, for failure after failure.

There's plenty of potential in that Northern Ireland side, whereas Scotland were playing to their limits under Strachan.
Scotland have plenty of potential too, players like Tierney, Paterson, Burke, Fraser, McGinn etc all coming through and looking promising. A couple of good young CBs too.
I completely agree, but why are you even bringing it up? I haven't heard anyone except for you mention religion.
FYI-the type of Old Firm fan who brings religion into football is unlikely to support Scotland anyway
I couldn't care less how you smell his name... he should be nowhere near the Scotland job. I saw first hand what his Brechin team was like. It wasn't pretty.
For the record
CL (Scotland) P24 W10 D5 L9 Win % 41.67
MO'N (Northern Ireland) P55 W19 D16 L20 Win % 34.55
Anyone who watched West Ham or Everton in the Europa cup will also realise Celtic would have no trouble in the EPL
If a manager needy to motivate players playing for their country then he has already picked the wrong players
there is talk he would become the highest paid manager Scotland have had which I think would be wrong..he is not that good..he is just adequate
