The Trinidad Express newspaper is reporting that a video-recorded incident of the sexual assault of a girl took place in Trinidad and Tobago.

The video was being circulated on social media and there were suggestions the incident took place in Jamaica, prompting the Jamaica Constabulary Force to launch an investigation.

However, a report by the Trinidad Express today said the grandmother of the girl in the video filed a report with police there last night.

It says the six-year-old child accompanied the grandmother to a police station in the Western Police Division.

The woman reportedly told police that she knew the suspect in the crime.

Police said that the family's neighbours beat the suspect and attempted to hand him over to officers.

However, he escaped.

He remained at large up to this afternoon.

The Express says the case has been handed over to officers of the Child Protection Unit.

Police have advised the public that anyone caught with pornographic material involving children can be charged with the offence of possession of child pornography.

If found guilty, they can face a fine of $30,000 or up to 10 years in prison.
