Tyser Mills Classics for Calabar today

The island’s high-school athletes will be on show at the Tyser Mills Classics at Calabar High School this morning at 9.
The meet, which is in its 15th year, will serve as a qualifier for the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championship, tentatively scheduled for next year.
“I am feeling very successful already, because, to be one of the first meets that is going to be staged in Jamaica right now during this COVID-19 pandemic, is marvellous for us,” chief meet organiser Millard Dunbar said. “The turnout (for registration) that we have seen is not great numbers, but it is great numbers in terms of the COVID-19 pandemic, because, when you see a school like Port Antonio [High School] from Portland and Rusea’s [High School] coming from the west, it speaks volumes of this meet.
“We will have the JAAA’s (Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association) president, Garth Gayle, who is on board with us, and we are expecting other well-known track and field persons at the meet.”
Dunbar said that COVID-19 protocols and guidelines will be in place at the meet, and he is urging all patrons to adhere to them.
AS SAFE AS POSSIBLE
“We will be enforcing strict protocols for the meet, as well as ensuring that the meet is competitively run as smoothly as possible,” he said. “There will be sanitisation stations and masks for everyone, because we want this meet to be as safe as possible.”
Jamaica College, Hydel High School, The Queen’s School, St Andrew High School for Girls, and St Elizabeth Technical High School are among some of the schools down to compete at the meet.
The events to be contested in both men’s and women’s sections are the 60m invitational, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 3000, 5000m and 4 x 800m relay.
Former national junior athletes Jazeel Murphy, Tyreke Wilson, and Edward Clarke Jr are also down to compete at the meet.
