SAARC Urged to Deploy Human Rights Monitors to Protect UN War Crimes Witnesses in Sri Lanka: TGTE

Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam (TGTE) appeals to South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC)

KATHMANDU, NEPAL, November 24, 2014 /EINPresswire.com/ --

The Prime Minister of the Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam Mr. Visuvanathan Rudrakumaran has sought the deployment of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) human rights monitors to protect war crimes witnesses to the UN sponsored international investigation on Sri Lanka and to help stop the ongoing structural genocide of Tamils in the island of Sri Lanka.

A letter has been sent to the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation’s Secretary General Arjun B. Thapa, expressing TGTE’s solidarity with SAARC and calling on him to name these monitors. In this letter, the TGTE expressed the belief that SAARC, whose founding charter pledged adherence to the principles of the United Nations Charter, can and should play an important role in ensuring amity and progress in the region, which could only be done by the upholding of rule of law and human rights to achieve the objectives of peace, freedom, social justice and economic development.

Citing the Convention on the Promotion of the Welfare of Children, the TGTE urges SAARC member States to offer protection to Tamil refugees, especially children, who fall within the jurisdiction of the respective members.

TGTE pointed out that after the conclusion of armed hostilities between the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam and the Government of Sri Lanka, The Tamils are being subject to extrajudicial killing, torture, white van abduction, etc.

Tamil lands have been colonized; the Tamil land has been grabbed; Tamil historic and archaeological places have been destroyed; in short, the Tamil’s very right to life, and their right to existence, are in danger. Not only the Tamils, but also our Muslim brethren have been targeted. The Tamils and the Muslims are being made sacrificial lambs at the altar of Sinhala supremacy.

Given these facts, the TGTE calls upon SAARC to send human rights monitors to the NorthEast part of the island of Sri Lanka to end these abuses and to allow the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to complete the investigation into international crimes and human rights abuses unimpeded.

The TGTE offers its congratulations to SAARC on its revitalized 18th Summit about to open in Kathmandu, and wishes the event to be a success.
