Big Brother and Big Sister of the Year Honored for Dedication to Mentorship

TAMPA, FL, UNITED STATES, July 9, 2018 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Every year, two volunteer mentors out of more than 150,000 “Bigs” nationwide are chosen to represent Big Brothers Big Sisters of America as the Big Brother and Big Sister of the Year. This year’s Big Brother of the Year Murray Miller, from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and Big Sister of the Year Myra Camino, from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, were honored June 28 at the Big Brothers Big Sisters of America National Conference Awards Gala, sponsored by Comcast NBCUniversal, in St. Louis, Missouri.

“These two volunteer mentors have made a big difference in the lives of their Littles,” says Pam Iorio, President and CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America. “They represent the life-changing outcomes of the Big Brothers Big Sisters program.”

2018 Big Sister of the Year Myra Camino

For the past five and a half years, Camino has been matched with her Little Sister, Saleen. In that time, Camino has helped Saleen gain confidence and cope with the loss of her father, who died when she was only 6. “She is always there when I need her, and I can talk to her any time,” Saleen says. “She always gives me an easier way when something is too difficult or complicated to understand, and she is very supportive of me and my family.”

Big Sister of the Year Myra helped Saleen develop positive coping skills to deal with her feelings. She worked with her to create a scrapbook about her dad so that she could focus on their happy memories. “I thought it would give her the opportunity to use her creativity to talk about her father to relieve some of that stress.”

2018 Big Brother of the Year Murray Miller

Big Brother of the Year Murray and his Little Brother Jolen have been matched for nearly six years, and in that time, Murray has been intentional about creating learning experiences for Jolen, even on fun outings. “Every year, we go to Wake Forest University for the Christmas Party,” Miller says. “I would park far on the other side of campus, so we had to walk through it. I would tell Jolen, ‘You could go to a school like this one day.’ The first time I told him this, it was like a lightbulb went on in his head.”

With Miller’s guidance, Jolen has adjusted to high school and is already planning for his college education and a big future. “I want to go to college, and maybe after college, thinking about military. Mr. Miller is a great role model, excellent leader, and he pushes me to be better in life,” Jolen says.
