Hoyer Statement on House Passage of the Bipartisan Conference Report

WASHINGTON, DC - House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement tonight on House passage of the bipartisan conference report to fund remaining appropriations bills for Fiscal Year 2019:

“Tonight, the House voted to keep government open and serving the American people as well as to improve the security of our borders with smart and strategic investments.  While this funding package is not what Democrats would have written, it represents a good faith compromise that both parties could accept.  Now it is up to President Trump to sign it into law and remove the threat of another shutdown.  I thank Chairwoman Lowey, Chairwoman Roybal-Allard, and the appropriators who worked hard to produce this conference report.

“I visited the border in Texas and New Mexico last week and can attest that there is no crisis or emergency of the kind the President alleges.  Declaring a national emergency, as I have stated, would be a violation of the spirit of our laws and run counter to our constitutional principles of separation of powers.  Democrats will use every tool at our disposal to protect our Constitution, our laws, and our system of checks and balances.  We will also take action to keep migrant families together, protect DREAMers and those with Temporary Protected Status, and push for comprehensive immigration reform.”
