Heavy Vehicle Electrification to Accelerate with Horizon High Power Stacks

Third Party Automotive Tests Confirm Industry-Leading Power Density

Third party automotive company tests validate industry-leading power density, exceptional self-humidification, suited to heavy vehicles, trains, ships

SHANGHAI, CHINA, July 29, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Ulm, Germany and Shanghai, China.

Horizon Fuel Cell Technologies has released third party automotive company test data on their state-of-the-art liquid-cooled fuel cell stacks, revealing an industry-leading stack power density of 4.2 kilowatts per liter (4.2kW/L) and exceptional self-humidification properties. This has been achieved in a long-lifetime fuel cell designed to cope with the rigors of commercial vehicle, train and marine applications, which are much more demanding than passenger vehicles.

Optimized for passenger vehicle applications, stack power density is expected to exceed 5kW/L, exceeding US DOE fuel cell commercialization targets.

These test results were revealed as Horizon navigates unprecedented interest from major manufacturers and fleet operators of buses, trucks and port equipment from a number of countries. In light of the high-volume deployments under discussion, Horizon has designed these latest stacks for mass production, using roll-to-roll production techniques for key fuel cell components.

David Wenger, CEO of Wenger Engineering in Germany, believes this progress is both inevitable and necessary in the fast-evolving fuel cell vehicle world: “Customers don’t want to compromise, they want the power levels they are accustomed to in commercial vehicles without paying exorbitant prices. Horizon is innovating to deliver excellent performance with viable costs, and we see great potential in Europe with that combination. We fervently believe in mass commercialization of hydrogen vehicles, and that’s why I co-founded a dedicated hydrogen infrastructure company, Hydrogentle GmbH. The world needs to adapt to hydrogen as a major energy carrier, not just a novelty.”

Heavy vehicles with high utilization are likely to represent the lion’s share of volume deployments of automotive fuel cells in the coming few years. Fleet based operators around the globe are seeking the best way to migrate commercial vehicle fleets from diesel powered engines to cleaner, electric propulsion. Demanding duty cycles call for hydrogen to enable that move away from fossil fuels.

Mr. George Gu, Chairman of Horizon Group, highlights the opportunities: "At Horizon, our quest has been for higher power density combined with stack durability, while ensuring mass production processes deliver the lowest possible costs of production. With our core technology validated, our next phase is volume production of high power, high power density, high durability stacks to accelerate long awaited global hydrogen mobility commercialization.”

Current Horizon priorities in mobility applications relate to buses, delivery trucks, forklifts and trains. Horizon is working with partners to deliver fuel cell mobility solutions with lower total cost of ownership than traditional combustion engines in the near term.
